I am reading Empire of Pain and just finished the part on this incident. NAPP was not fined nearly enough for this happening. Rest in Peace to those who lost their lives that day. This negligent incident could have easily been avoided had NAPP not agreed to contracting work using all different sorts of chemicals, educated their employees, and trained them properly.

If you’re interested in what it was like at Youngstown Sheet and Tube as well as RG Steel in Warren pick up a copy of my book, “Steeltown Down,” available at Amazon Books. It’s about my 43 years spent in both mills and what it was like to be one of the last three men at Sheet and Tube, and the very last man at RGSteel on their last days of operations. I also worked with a demolition crew for five years tearing down RGSteel and that’s why I was the last employee there. If you read the book I think you’ll get a much better understanding of how hard a steelworkers’ job was and still is.
